30 Years of Gratitude
In 1988, my father loaned me $500 to start a tutoring business, a business I wholly believed would be a one or two-year side junket until I figured out what I was really going to do with my college education. Little did I know that the $500 would launch an adventure that continues some 30 years later. Yes, 2018 marks Summit’s 30-year anniversary! With Thanksgiving upon us, I am compelled to reflect, and I find myself flooded with gratitude – gratitude for all of those who have been a part of this journey called Summit Educational Group.
Summit does not sell widgets nor technology; we are most decidedly a business of people, relationships, and communities — an ecosystem of which we are privileged to be a part. Every day, we have the opportunity to connect with school counselors, educational consultants, admissions officers, families, and tutors, all with a common purpose – to put our students in the best position to be successful in life. It is humbling to be part of such a community.
Our students, at the center of it all, fit tutoring sessions into free pockets of time that are ridiculously few and far between. They do the hard work – smiling, yawning, and grumbling all the way to higher scores, making us look good in the process. Make no mistake, though, they earn and deserve every bit of success they achieve.
Some parents sit on the sidelines watching anxiously while others jump into the field of play, but no matter the style, it all comes from a place of love. Their children are embarking on a rite of passage to independence, adulthood, and a departure from the nest. It is an emotional, anxious, even disorienting time. We understand that, and we work hard to temper the stress.
School counselors and educational consultants guide students and parents through the anxiety-producing college process, helping those students to discover their authentic selves. It is meaningful and often life-changing work.
Our staff and our tutors and teachers are the face and heart of Summit. They are an incredibly intelligent, committed group of professionals who care deeply about making every single Summit program a success. They have been my family for the last 30 years.
I’m very proud of the reputation and success that Summit has earned over the last 30 years. My father always told me to strive to “do well by doing good.” I believe Summit has done that. Any success we’ve had is because all of us at Summit care deeply about those we serve, and that caring goes far beyond the “business” of test prep.
With the deepest gratitude, I thank all who have been a part of the Summit community over the past three decades. Without you, Summit would not have made it to 30.
