Tutor

The role of Tutor is challenging, fun, and rewarding.  As a Summit Tutor you will help students reach their potential and open doors for them, empowering them to reach some of their wildest dreams. As such, this is a position of impact where you will be making a true difference in the lives of the students and families you work with.

This is a part time opportunity, a perfect job for those who love connecting with young adults, are passionate about education, and find true enjoyment in helping others accomplish their goals. The role of Tutor is highly flexible, allowing you to fit tutoring around your schedule, even if you have a full-time job, are busy with family commitments, or simply enjoy a schedule packed with hobbies.  Tutoring sessions are 90 minutes, occur mostly on weekday evenings or weekends, and can be scheduled directly between you and your students.

Summit staff will provide you with training, materials, and a constant support system, to ensure you are able to perform at your best.  We are here to help you with tutoring questions as well as any logistic concerns that arise.  We take care of client recruiting and billing and keep you informed of the latest news in the test prep world so that you are free to focus on what you do best: building relationships that support academic growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • This position is part-time. Tutors are expected to maintain a minimum of 3 students (approximately 6 hours a week).
  • Tutor responsibilities include analyzing student diagnostic performance, determining student needs, teaching Summit curriculum, assigning homework, and updating parents/caregivers and the Summit office about student progress.
  • Some programs are divided between a math instructor and a verbal instructor, giving tutors the ability to teach to their strengths. In this case, each tutor generally meets once every other week with a student.

Your Skill Set

As a candidate for the role of Tutor you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Experience and/or a high level of comfort working with high school aged adolescents, alongside an ability to build trusting relationships.
  • Understanding and facility with concepts that appear on the ACT and SAT, including algebraic expressions, angles, exponents and roots, as well as conventions of standard English.
  • A student-centered disposition that prioritizes the learning needs of the young people we serve.
  • Teaching or tutoring experience is welcomed, but not required.
  • Access to reliable transportation and willingness to travel 30-60 minutes to students’ homes.
  • Reliable internet access for updating student information, submitting hours, and conducting online lessons as needed.
  • Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong ability to follow through on commitments, while being flexible in light of student schedule changes.

Compensation:

Tutors are compensated at a rate of $35 – $45/hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Tutors are compensated for travel to sessions taking over 30 minutes. All tutors are evaluated annually, and rate increases reward our best tutors. There are additional opportunities to teach, proctor, and research for those looking to expand their role.

Recruiter (part-time)

Summit’s strength lies in the expertise and commitment of our tutors. We are constantly seeking to expand our tutor staff with great talent. The Summit recruiter will create and nurture relationships with diverse constituents, and create a presence for hiring on social media. A successful candidate will research, develop, and implement effective recruiting and staffing strategies to attract a diverse pool of qualified and capable talent for the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops, facilitates, and implements all phases of the recruitment process.
  • Collaborates with the Tutor and Teacher Services department and Human Resources to identify and draft detailed and accurate job descriptions and hiring criteria.
  • Identifies and implements efficient and effective recruiting methods and strategies based on the available role, industry standards, and the needs of the organization.
  • Identifies the best avenues for job posting and advertisement and executes the plan within budget.
  • Screens applications and selects qualified candidates.
  • Serve as the main point of contact during the selection process and process new hire paperwork for Tutor and Teacher Services department.
  • Schedules interviews; oversees preparation of interview questions and other hiring and selection materials.
  • Assists with the interview process, attending and conducting interviews with the TTS team.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and company policies.
  • Connects with and visits college career services departments to leverage the tutoring opportunities for their students.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Program Director - MA

Summit Educational Group is seeking an organized, reliable, and relationship-driven leader to join our team as a Program Director. Program Directors play a key role in our organization, providing oversight to our portfolio of tutoring programs, managing our talented tutors, and establishing and building lasting client relationships. This position reports to the Director of 1-on-1 Tutoring and is currently remote, returning to our Newton, MA office when it is safe to do so.

Tasked with oversight of the tutoring programs, the Program Director will service the needs of a group of Summit’s clients, from initial contact through post-program follow up. Our clients come to us with high expectations for their experience, and we seek to exceed those expectations through timely follow-up, a friendly and professional demeanor, and expert knowledge of Summit and the test prep industry as a whole.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the student-tutor relationship, including matching process and providing support, guidance, and advice to tutors.Engender trust and build rapport, working alongside families and tutors through regular phone and email check-ins to ensure student progress.
  • Serve as case manager for each family that commits to working with Summit, providing thoughtful and proactive pre- through post-program service.
  • Engage in consultative sales, customizing Summit services to the needs of each family and recommending complementary services to the Summit client base.
  • Maintain accurate records of client interactions and tutor-client engagement in support of establishing and maintaining an awareness of the status of tutoring relationships.
  • Develop intimate knowledge of the standardized testing industry and Summit’s tutoring programs.
  • Assist in development of divisional strategic plan.

Test Proctor (part-time) - CT/NY

Summit Educational Group is seeking an organized, reliable Test Proctor to provide a positive, comfortable testing environment for our students. The Test Proctor will oversee Summit’s weekend practice tests (SAT, ACT, SSAT, and ISEE). This position will report to the Office Coordinator and Director of 1-on-1 Tutoring for Connecticut and New York. This is a non-exempt, part-time position not to exceed 40 hours per week.

  • Key Responsibilities:
    Arrive by 8:15 AM, unlock the office, prepare classrooms, and write test timing on whiteboards.
    Greet students and parents, record attendance, and direct students to appropriate classroom.
  •  Answer and troubleshoot student questions on timing and test instruction, which does not involve instructing testing strategies or content knowledge but does require knowledge of test formats.
  • Distribute testing materials, read testing instructions aloud to students, and begin practice tests on time.
  • Keep track of unique timing for 2-4 test types, circulate through testing rooms to ensure students are working on the right section, and alert students with 5 minute warnings (or 15 minute warnings as needed).
  • Record any issues or unusual things that come up throughout test day.
  • Ensure the hallways are quiet during breaks.
  • Collect answer sheets from students as they finish testing.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of testing areas.
  • At the end of the day, scan and save answer sheets into Summit’s network drive for scoring.

Your Skill Set:

As a candidate for the role of Test Proctor you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • Previous proctoring experience desirable, but not required.
  • Dependable and punctual with access to reliable transportation.
  • An upbeat and friendly presence with excellent communication skills.
  • Resourceful and a high degree of organization and time management.
  • An ability to prioritize multiple streams of work with a fine attention to detail.
  • Must be responsible and enjoy working with students ranging from grades 4-12.
  • The ability to work part time most Saturdays and Sundays. (Testing hours typically run from 8:15 AM to 12:15 PM or from 8:15 AM to 2:00 PM).
  • High school diploma (required). In addition, 1-2 years’ work experience in customer service with demonstrated responsibility OR 1-2 years of postsecondary education

Location:

This part-time position will be based in Summit’s offices in New Canaan, CT and/or White Plains, NY. Additional opportunities are available in Westport, CT and Ridgefield, CT. The ability to work in multiple locations is a plus.

Pay and Hours:

This is a non-exempt, part-time position not to exceed 40 hours per week. Test Proctors typically are eligible for approximately 4-12 hours of work per week. The pay rate for this hourly role is $20 per hour.
