Charles O’Hearn


While an undergraduate at Yale University, Charlie provided personalized, in-home tutoring services to students in the New Haven area. Seeing a need for one-on-one, in-home tutoring and test preparation, he launched Summit Educational Group in Wellesley, MA in 1988. Charlie has written a number of highly regarded test preparation books, which are used by tutoring companies and schools around the country. He is an expert in the field of tutoring and test preparation and is a frequent speaker and panelist at education conferences, forums, and schools around the country.

Michael Dean

Executive Director

Michael received a BA in Film from Emerson College and MA in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.  He has held several different management positions during his 10+ years at Summit, and his customer service focus and integrity make him well-suited to his latest role managing Summit’s Massachusetts office.  Michael is highly-regarded among school and independent counselors throughout New England and New York as a trusted test prep partner who does all he can on behalf of his clients.


Drew Heilpern, PhD.

Chief Brand Ambassador

Drew graduated cum laude from Duke University with degrees in Biology and Elementary Education. He then completed his PhD in Immunology from Tufts Medical School. After completing his postdoctoral fellowship, Drew began tutoring for Summit where his passion as an educator quickly made him one of Summit’s most requested tutors. Outside of Summit, Drew is busy with his two girls both under the age of two, his two cats, and talking shop with his wife, Carol, who is also a Summit tutor.

  • Rob Fisher
    Rob Fisher Assistant Director, School Partnerships

    Rob Fisher is a graduate of Penn State University, where he obtained his BA in Psychology. He then pursued further education at Boston College, where he received his MA in Mental Health Counseling. Rob has held positions as Program Director and Manager of Tutor Services at Summit. Prior to Summit, Rob worked as a social worker in housing development. He utilizes these counseling skills in his tutoring and a variety of other educational backgrounds. Rob is an avid golfer, and also enjoys tennis and running.

  • James Saelee
    James Saelee Managing Director, Operations & Tutor Services, Connecticut & New York

    James is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where he double majored in Music and Political Science. While there, he worked as a volunteer tutor in math and reading for Berkeley Unified School District. Including his time at Summit, James has eight years of experience in the tutoring and test prep industry. In his role as the Director of 1-1 Tutoring, James enjoys working closely with families to customize tutoring programs to suit each student’s specific needs and goals.

  • Joshua White
    Joshua White Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Training

    In his role as Director of Curriculum, Joshua oversees the development, implementation, and oversight of Summit’s curriculum, instruction, and training. Prior to his role, Joshua spent 3 years as a Summit tutor and classroom teacher, preparing students for the SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, and essay-writing. With over 10 years of tutoring experience, Joshua has taught students from kindergarteners to senior citizens in everything from cooking to computers.

  • Lisa Houtzeel
    Lisa Houtzeel Program Director

    Lisa joined Summit in 2008 as an SAT, SSAT and ISEE tutor. In her current role as Program Director, Lisa enjoys building relationships with families and drawing on her experiences as both a tutor and as a parent, to design and personalize Summit’s programs for each individual student. Lisa graduated from University of Massachusetts in Amherst with dual degree in Sociology and Journalism and a minor in Psychology.

  • Marvin Wolfert
    Marvin Wolfert Lead Program Director

    Marvin Wolfert has been a Summit tutor since 2004, and has served as a Summit Program Director since 2012. Marvin graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a degree in English Literature, and also holds a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School. Marvin’s professional background includes 15 years in estate and business planning law and 7 years in retail management. Away from Summit, Marvin is a proud and busy grandfather, and an avid reader and runner. Marvin has also run over 20 marathons since 2008, including multiple Boston Marathons.

  • Whitney Longworth
    Whitney Longworth Director of Business Development

    Whitney graduated cum laude from Connecticut College where she was a selected scholar for the Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy.  Her professional background has focused on client relations in both the retail and entertainment fields.  She started as a tutor with Summit before joining the team full-time as a Program Director.  Whitney enjoys collaborating with our school and counselor partners in her role at Summit.  Outside of work, she freelances in the film and entertainment fields and enjoys planning elaborate theme parties.

  • Ashley Gilbert
    Ashley Gilbert Assistant Director of Classroom Programs, Massachusetts

    Ashley Gilbert is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where she obtained her BA in Psychology. She then earned her MA in Mental Health Counseling from Boston College. Prior to Summit, Ashley worked as a social worker in a community mental health center in the Metrowest area of Massachusetts. She frequently uses her coordination and counseling skills from her time as a social worker to help ensure that Summit’s families’ and schools’ needs are met. Ashley is an avid reader, and also enjoys dancing, and running.

  • Katie Sewall
    Katie Sewall Marketing Manager

    Katie is a graduate of Boston College with a BA in English and Journalism. While at Boston College, Katie wrote for the school newspaper and tutored at Frederick Pilot Middle School in Boston, MA. At Summit, Katie manages email campaigns, social media programs, event planning, and participates in various other marketing programs and activities. Prior to Summit, Katie worked in software sales. In her free time, Katie’s passions include writing, yoga, and spending time with family and friends.

  • Alex McBride
    Alex McBride Program Director, Massachusetts

    Alex McBride graduated with her BA in English and Sociology from California Lutheran University. She then decided to move across the country to pursue her MA in Publishing and Writing from Emerson College. She worked a plethora of jobs before finding her place in the Summit family. Alex is a Program Director, verbal tutor, and occasional proctor for Summit’s weekend practice tests. She enjoys reading, playing video games, and spending time with her dog and cat overlords.

  • Alysha Hearn
    Alysha Hearn Regional Director of Strategic Partnerships

    Alysha Hearn attended Earlham College where she earned a B.A. in Art, graduated with honors and was a Bonner Community Service Scholar. She later pursued an M.S. in Global Studies and International Relations at Northeastern University where she gained admission to the Sigma Epsilon Rho Honor Society. Alysha has been committed to the field of education management for many years, working with middle school age students through adult learners. Her personal and professional mission is to help people reach their life goals through education.

  • Laura Rothman
    Laura Rothman Director, One-on-One Operations

    Laura is originally from Bolton, Massachusetts. She attended Applewild School in Fitchburg and Middlesex School in Concord. She earned her bachelor’s in Mathematics and secondary concentrations in Economics and French from Bates College. She has tutored the SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, and additional math subjects since 2010, and joined Summit in 2015 as a Program Director. Outside of her work for Summit, she enjoys working with the Boston rowing community as a volunteer and coach.

  • Allison Kaplan
    Allison Kaplan Managing Director, Massachusetts

    Allison grew up in Framingham, MA and did her undergraduate at UMass Amherst and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology at The Ohio State University. She has 20 years of experience in Higher Education, as an Academic Advisor, Academic Counselor, and also as a Director of the Tutoring Services at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Allison has tutored for Summit steadily for the last several years. She currently lives in Hopkinton, MA with her husband, teenage son, and two cats. She loves jigsaw puzzles, cooking, and reading.

  • Lauren Campbell
    Lauren Campbell Assistant Director of Classroom Programs, Connecticut & New York

    Lauren graduated cum laude from Salve Regina University with a major in Global Business & Economics, and a minor in Business Administration. Prior to Summit, Lauren worked in retail, where she built strong personal and professional relationships by offering impeccable customer service and support. Outside of work, Lauren enjoys spending time on her boat, cheering on the New York Rangers, and running after her labs, Bowie and Hank.

  • John McKissick
    John McKissick Program Director

    John grew up in Easton, Connecticut, and attended Fairfield Prep. John is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he obtained his BA in Political Science. John continued his education at Duke University, where he earned his Master’s in Management Studies. Before Summit, John interned in marketing at Johnson & Johnson’s consumer products division. When he’s not tutoring or working at Summit, John enjoys reading, watching college football, and challenging his friends to board games.

  • Matt Doyle
    Matt Doyle Senior Director of Fulfillment

    Matt arrived at Summit in 2016 with a wealth of experience in inventory management and printing. After an appearance at UMass Amherst as a history major, he chose to pursue a career in trade work and operational management. Matt is a self-taught musician and craftsman who has worked in stringed instrument and antique repair shops, carpentry, painting and has spent time brewing beer. He enjoys taking long walks in nature with his dog Kiki and playing music as much as possible.

  • Jack Carbonell
    Jack Carbonell Program Director

    Jack Carbonell is a graduate of Colgate University, where he earned a B.A. in English and Film & Media Studies.  Jack grew up in Norwalk and attended St. Luke’s School in New Canaan.  Prior to working at Summit, Jack worked as a freelancer in the film industry.  He collaborated on a variety of independent film productions, and worked as a photographer and video editor.  As a Program Director, Jack enjoys connecting with parents and helping them design a smart and practical testing plan for their child. On the weekends, Jack likes to spend his time hiking, skiing, and occasionally binge-watching Netflix.

  • Adria Frenzel
    Adria Frenzel Finance Coordinator

    Adria grew up in Needham, MA and received her BA in Communications from UMass Amherst. Prior to Summit she worked in retail management. Adria lived in the Midwest for many years before moving back to the Boston area. She draws on her experience as a mother and from her background in management to communicate with Summit’s families and coworkers.  She enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing tennis, and exploring places in New England that she has never visited.

  • Maureen Axon
    Maureen Axon Office Manager

    Maureen earned a B.S. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business and her M.B.A. with honors from the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business. She has held numerous client focused positions in the financial and management consulting sectors. In these roles, Maureen has managed multimillion dollar projects, identified and resolved client issues and concerns, and developed and delivered training for staff and clients of all levels. Maureen spends her free time volunteering in her community, reading and trying to keep up with her four teenaged children.

  • Lara Paquette
    Lara Paquette Director of Tutor and Teacher Services

    Lara is a graduate of New York University, where she earned her BS in English Education and her MA in Educational Theater, with certification to teach both subjects. Lara grew up in Scarsdale, NY and graduated from Edgemont High School. Prior to joining Summit, Lara taught English and Theater and tutored a wide range of subjects. She also counseled students from across New York City through the college application process. Outside of work, Lara enjoys all aspects of theater (as a performer and an audience member), cooking, and spending time with her husband and son.

  • Stephen Henkel
    Stephen Henkel Manager of Tutor and Teacher Services

    Stephen earned his B.A. in both English and Philosophy from East Carolina University. He taught English to medical and engineering university students in Saudi Arabia before returning to the U.S. and working for Summit as a classroom teacher and 1-on-1 tutor. Stephen has also taught a wide variety of classes in Fairfield county, from anatomy to computer applications. He’s taught students from over 20 countries at EF Education First, and developed his own after school curriculum for Greenwich Country Day School. Stephen is a husband and father who loves fountain pens, calligraphy, and hiking.

  • Joe Ayala
    Joe Ayala Program Director

    Originally from the Bronx, Joe attended the Dalton School before earning a BA in Political Science from Columbia University and then an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from Sarah Lawrence College. He has had a few interesting stops during his career that include: White House Intern, paralegal, teacher, and youth serving non-profit manager. Joe enjoys following the Yankees, cooking for his three daughters, fixing things around the house, self-deprecating humor, and taking some of the stress out of the college admissions testing season for families.

  • Ruth Watterson
    Ruth Watterson Program Director

    Ruth graduated from St. Andrews, Scotland, with a MA(Hons) First Class in English and Modern History.  She went on to pursue a Masters in History from Harvard University.  Prior to joining Summit, Ruth worked as an Academic Advisor and Lecturer at Northeastern University and a Senior Resident Tutor and Teaching Fellow at Harvard University. Ruth enjoys crafting, dancing and running around after her young son.

  • Zdenka Sturm
    Zdenka Sturm Assistant Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Training

    Zdenka graduated with an Anthropology BA from Harvard, where she was recognized with a Detur Prize and a Center for European Studies Grant. She joined Summit as a tutor in 2007. She is an enthusiastic educator and more recently worked as an Adjunct Instructor in Biology at Cambridge College. In her current role, she assists in the development of Summit’s new curriculum, instruction, and training materials. Zdenka is especially passionate about mathematics and enjoys studying abstract algebra and number theory in her spare time.

  • Alex Hadley
    Alex Hadley Assistant Director of Tutor & Teacher Services

    Alex Hadley graduated cum laude from Boston College with a BA in English and Communication. While at Boston College, she worked as a writing tutor and as a teaching assistant. She has been a Summit tutor since 2017, and has been a member of the Tutor and Teacher Services team since 2018. She enjoys her relationships with fellow tutors, and is passionate about education—she loves to “talk shop” about best tutoring practices and how to best help individual students. In her spare time, Alex enjoys reading, rock climbing, tackling the NY Times crossword, and bonding time with her two cats.

  • Nhi Pham
    Nhi Pham Program Director

    Nhi grew up in Florida and received her B.S. in Anthropology and Certificate in Educational Studies from the University of Central Florida. As a certified middle-school teacher, she has spent the last three years working as a science teacher and tutor. Through her role as a Program Director, Summit has provided Nhi the opportunity to connect with many wonderful families and support students on their educational journeys. In her spare time, Nhi can be found baking, listening to podcasts, and hanging out with her husband and their two dogs.
